NOAA Open Data Dissemination (NODD) will expand cloud-based access to near real-time data from NOAA’s Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) with the addition of data from the latest GOES satellite, GOES-19.
Currently, NODD provides access to near real-time and historical data from GOES-16, -17, and -18 via three cloud partners, including Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Microsoft Azure (Azure), and Amazon Web Services (AWS). With the recent launch of GOES-19 on June 25, 2024, NODD has been working closely with the GOES-R program and NODD’s cloud partners to host the data once it is declared provisional (i.e., approved for public distribution). Provisional status is expected to begin for some of the GOES-19 products in November 2024 with the majority of GOES-19 products becoming available for distribution on a rolling basis in early 2025.
GOES-19 is the fourth and final satellite in the GOES-R Series, which provides advanced imagery and atmospheric measurements, real-time mapping of lighting activity, and space weather observations.
Once GOES-19 is declared ready for operations in April 2025, it will replace GOES-16 as the operational GOES-East satellite. It will work in tandem with GOES-18, the operational GOES-West satellite, to monitor weather and hazardous conditions for more than half the globe, including from New Zealand to the west coast of Africa and from near the Arctic Circle to the Antarctic Circle.
GOES-R Access & Links
To learn more about access to near real-time and past GOES data via NODD, please visit our Program Datasets page or the cloud partner links below. GOES-16 data are available on NODD starting in 2017 to the present, GOES-17 data are available from 2018 to 2023, and GOES-18 data are available from 2023 to the present.
Google Cloud Platform (GCP) makes GOES-16/17/18 data available through BigQuery and Google Cloud Storage. Once available, GOES-19 data can be accessed through the NOAA GOES Google Cloud Marketplace page.
Microsoft Azure makes select GOES-16/17/18 data available via Microsoft Planetary Computer and the Microsoft GitHub NOAA GOES-R page. Azure has some of the GOES data available as STAC items and queryable through the Planetary Computer’s STAC API.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) makes GOES-16/17/18 data available through the Registry of Open Data (RODA).
As each GOES-19 dataset reaches its provisional data maturity status, it will become available on NODD. Any data or imagery shared after provisional declaration but before GOES-19 is declared the operational GOES-East satellite must include the following caveat: “GOES-19 Preliminary, Non-Operational Data”.
NODD User Engagement & Additional Resources
NODD provides opportunities for data users to connect with NOAA and cloud subject matter experts during NODD Office Hours. Please visit noaa.gov/nodd to view resources from past Office Hours, including an Office Hours held in November 2023 which focused on GOES-R Crysophere products, and to view upcoming Office Hours.
NODD welcomes feedback and would like to hear about your experience accessing and using NOAA data available through NODD. To send feedback, ask questions, or inquire about other user engagement activities, please contact the NODD team at nodd@noaa.gov.
